The condensed main navigation can be found in the header of the condensed (or Spotlight) layout of a website. In this navigation, text links display in the header to the right of the site title. This navigation differs from the default option in that it does not span the full width of the site container.

Design Considerations

Some sites emphasize one or more high-impact visuals, have only one or a few total pages, and include minimal text content; for example, a single page highlighting an upcoming special event.

For this purpose, a semi-transparent header with brief navigation appears over the featured image. If additional navigation elements are present, the word “More” appears with a drop-down menu to those links.

Best Practices

  • Use the condensed navigation for sites with very few pages and minimal information architecture.
  • When using this option, limit main navigation elements to three or four links to avoid the “More” overflow. Users will not see elements listed under “More” unless they click here.
